Yom Kippur/Hebrew Text

Blessings

Compiled by Stephen Butterfass and Eric Bonnell for Religious Living on the Web.

Traditionally, every act and every pleasure required recognition of God's primary role as the author of our needs and wants. As the Talmud states, "it is forbidden to enjoy anything of this world without saying a blessing" (Talmud Bavli, Berakoth 35a). In order to encourage this awareness of God's role, many different blessings were composed. They include blessings when one has physical pleasure, blessings of praise and gratitude, and blessings when performing a mitzvah.

The following are relevant to our everyday lives, blessings in praise of life, creation, and the Creator:

Before eating bread Before drinking wine For grain products
Eating fruit from trees Eating food from the soil All other foods
Affixing a mezuzah On seeing lightning On hearing thunder
On seeing the ocean Beauties of nature On seeing a rainbow
On hearing good news Any joyous occasion On hearing bad news
Candle lighting During illness The efficacy of prayer
Peace For studying Torah When dispirited
Wearing new clothes What we should be For freedom
A social action blessing Author of freedom In gratitude
For being Jewish Blessing children Before a journey
For a Torah scholar For a secular scholar For justice
Redeemer of Israel Blessing for peace Thanksgiving prayer
